Before anyone can process Ayato’s warning, Kaneki is ambushed and dragged away by a sadistic ghoul known as Jason. Anteiku is thrown into panic. Nobody knows where he has been taken, or whether he is even still alive. The cliffhanger at the end of this chapter is genuinely shocking.
With Amon down, a new figure steps onto the battlefield, and the air itself seems to freeze. Kishou Arima, the CCG’s undefeated Reaper, has arrived. Every ghoul present knows his name, and every one of them is afraid. Arima’s arrival changes the entire atmosphere of the battlefield instantly.
Kaneki sees the danger in Eto’s plan. A mass breakout would drown the city in blood. He decides to stop her, even though it means fighting the very ghouls who see him as their king. Kaneki’s moral stand against Eto’s plan defines who he has become.
The city slowly returns to normal, or something like it. Humans and ghouls eye each other warily, but the open war is over. Kaneki watches it all, knowing his work is far from done. The city returning to normal, or something like it, is quietly hopeful.
The curtain falls on Kaneki’s journey. From a lonely student to a legend who changed the world, his story is complete. But in the world of ghouls and humans, every ending is just another beginning. Every ending being another beginning feels exactly right for this story.
The torture continues day after day, and Kaneki’s mind starts to fracture. He hallucinates, reliving his mother’s death and his own helplessness. Jason watches with delight, savoring every crack in Kaneki’s spirit. Kaneki’s mental torment is portrayed with devastating honesty.
The reunion is brief and wordless. Touka sees what Kaneki has become, and her heart breaks a little. There is no time for explanations. The Doves keep coming, and the night is far from over. The brief reunion is bittersweet, with no time for the words they owe each other.
